Elon Musk Seeks To End Lawsuit Over 'Inadvertent' Late Disclosure Of Twitter Stake

Elon Musk asked a U.S. judge to throw out a lawsuit claiming that his delayed disclosure of a large stake in Twitter Inc defrauded shareholders who sold Twitter stock at artificially low prices because they were kept in the dark. In the federal court case in Manhattan, investors accused Musk, who bought Twitter for $44 billion in October, of waiting 11 days past a U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission deadline the previous March to disclose he had bought 5% of its stock. The shareholders said Musk saved more than $200 million by adding to his holdings - while quietly meeting with Twitter executives about his plans for the social media company - before finally revealing a 9.2% stake, cheating stock sellers and options traders out of the "true value" of their securities. But in a Monday night filing, Musk said investors in the proposed class action had no independent right to obtain damages under the SEC disclosure rule, and could not show that all class members actually r

Hungary Most Corrupt EU Member In 2022: Report

Hungary slid to bottom place among EU nations in a corruption index, with graft watchdog Transparency International on Tuesday alleging misuse by "political elites" of state and bloc funds. Hungary has been embroiled in a long running spat with Brussels over corruption and rule of law concerns that have led to the freezing of billions of euros of bloc funding. In a bid to unlock the funds, Budapest committed to a range of legal and anti-corruption reforms, including the set-up of a watchdog that includes a Transparency International staff member. Hungary replaced Bulgaria as the last among EU and western European countries in the group's "Corruption Perceptions Index" report for 2022 launched on Tuesday. The report noted "a decade of democratic backsliding and systemic deterioration of the rule of law at the hands of the ruling party". "Evidence is mounting against political elites on their misuse of both state and EU funds," it said. B

Amit Shah's Remarks On Mhadei Water For Karnataka Stirs Opposition In Goa

Opposition parties in Goa have closed ranks to demand Chief Minister Pramod Sawant's resignation for "not taking a stand" over the Mhadei issue, days after Union Home Minister Amit Shah's remarks that the BJP has resolved the dispute and given the river water to Karnataka caused a flutter in the coastal state. As the Congress, AAP, TMC, and Goa Forward Party, sought to corner Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who belongs to BJP, the latter on Monday said there will be no compromise on the Mhadei issue and that his government was working to protect the river water from being diverted. Goa and neighbouring Karnataka have been engaged in a tussle over sharing of the river water for several years. Goa has often accused Karnataka of proceeding unilaterally in the matter by ignoring pacts. Speaking to reporters, Sawant said Goa has a strong legal standing in the Supreme Court on the issue. "There will be no compromise on it and the government has been working to protec

Stones Thrown At My Convoy, Says Nitish Kumar's Sulking Aide

Disgruntled JD(U) leader Upendra Kushwaha, who recently raised a banner of revolt against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Monday alleged that his car was pelted with stones in Bhojpur district of the state. Mr Kushwaha, who is also a member of the state legislative council, made the allegation on his official Twitter handle, tagging Nitish Kumar and the Bihar Police. "Some anti-social elements attacked my car at Nayka Tola, Jagdishpur (Bhojpur). They ran away when security personnel tried to chase them," Mr Kushwaha tweeted in Hindi. The district police said it was investigating the matter and trying to identify the culprits. No injuries have been reported in the incident. Mr Kushwaha, upon return to the state capital, claimed he was clueless about the identity and motive of the attackers. The former Union minister has been in a sulk ever since Mr Kumar rebuffed speculations of his induction as deputy CM, making it clear that only RJD's Tejashwi Yadav will hold

Amid Rising Tensions In Middle East, Dubai Offers Olive Branch

A private museum in the United Arab Emirates unveiled on Saturday a Torah scroll that survived the Holocaust, the latest sign of what Israel and its new Arab allies describe as a new approach to understanding Jewish history in the Middle East. Ahmed Obaid Al Mansoori, founder of the Crossroads of Civilizations Museum in Dubai's historic district, said the display, unveiled for International Holocaust Remembrance Day would help combat "big denial" of the Holocaust in the region. "For us peace is a complete peace," Al Mansoori said. "Many people have forgotten the Jews are part of the region. So here, we're trying to show ... the good days between the Jews and the Arabs in the past." The scroll is on permanent loan to the museum from the Memorial Scrolls Trust, which looks after more than 1,000 Czech scrolls saved from the Holocaust and later sent to London. "I lived in the Arab world when I was young, and the term Holocaust does not exist .

Uncontrolled Construction Caused Joshimath's Land Subsidence, Say Experts

Unplanned and uncontrolled construction in the name of development in Uttarakhand has brought Joshimath on the brink of sinking, experts said on Saturday and demanded that Himalayas be declared an eco-sensitive zone. In a resolution passed at the roundtable organised by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM), experts termed as "inadequate" the steps taken to deal with the prevailing situation in subsidence-hit Joshimath. They also asked the government to consider taking long-term measures to address the problem, saying a similar situation may arise in Nainital, Mussoorie and other areas of Garhwal as well if the "so-called development driven by human greed" is not checked in the hill state. "Declare Himalayas as an eco-sensitive zone. Regulate big projects causing devastation," the resolution said. While the width of the road under the Char Dham road widening project must be regulated to intermediate standard to minimize the damage to the terrain, Char Dham ra

The website of Makkal Needhi Maiam, a party floated by actor-politician Kamal Haasan has been hacked, the party said on Friday. Hours after the website was hacked, MNM's Twitter handle announced that the "official website of the party has been hacked by some miscreants" and that the party would not be cowed down by such threat and would give a befitting reply. US Shuts Down Ransomware Group "Hive" That Extorted Over $100 Million

The US Justice Department announced Thursday it had shut down the Hive ransomware operation, which had extorted more than $100 million from more than 1,500 victims worldwide. US Attorney General Merrick Garland said that US authorities working with German and Netherlands law enforcement took over Hive's website and servers after having infiltrated it for nearly seven months. The infiltration helped hundreds of companies avoid paying $130 million in extortion demands made after Hive hacked and froze their data systems. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco called the operation to infiltrate Hive a "21st-century cyber stakeout."  "We hacked the hackers," she said. Hive operated as a ransomware service, meaning anyone could hire its software and other services to help hack into and lock down a target's IT systems, and to process payments. Hive and the client would share the profits from the extortion.  Since it first emerged in 2021 more than 1,500 companie

Amazon Staff In UK Claims Their Toilet Breaks Were Timed

The workers further claimed that they work in "severe" conditions and are constantly monitored, a BBC report said. The staff are upbraided for "ideal time" lasting just a few minutes. Amazon has a system that recognises great performance," BBC reported. Two Amazon workers told BBC that the robots in the warehouse "are treated better than us". Darren Westwood and Garfield Hilton said that the managers asked questions if they took a toilet break. "The thing with stopping work is that they want to know why," said Mr Hilton. "So if the time is beyond a couple of minutes they can see it on the system." "How Close...": Ex US Secretary Of State On India-Pak Nuke Threat After Balakot

Former US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has claimed that he was awakened to speak to his then Indian counterpart Sushma Swaraj who told him that Pakistan was preparing for a nuclear attack in the wake of the Balakot surgical strike in February 2019 and India is preparing its own escalatory response. In his latest book 'Never Give an Inch: Fighting for the America I Love' that hit the stores on Tuesday, Pompeo says that the incident took place when he was in Hanoi for the US-North Korea Summit on February 27-28 and his team worked overnight with both New Delhi and Islamabad to avert this crisis. "I do not think the world properly knows just how close the India-Pakistan rivalry came to spilling over into a nuclear conflagration in February 2019. The truth is, I don't know precisely the answer either; I just know it was too close," Pompeo writes. "Post Box To Heaven" In UK Receives Over 2,000 Letters

Over 2,000 letters have been sent to a post box, which is popularly called "post box to heaven" where friends and family leave notes for their dead loved ones. It was set up in November 2021,  during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is located in Dell, in the formal gardens at Walton Hall in Warrington, United Kingdom, as per a report in BBC . Letters are written on biodegradable wildflower seed paper and then planted in the gardens. The BBC states that the hall became a place for people "to come and reflect and remember their loved ones". Following the same trend, a crematorium recently set up a similar postbox in Nottingham. A nine-year-old girl Matilda Handy decided this as a medium to express her feelings after her grandparents died, according to UK's Metro . After approaching the owners of Gedling Crematorium in Nottinghamshire about the idea, the management installed the white postbox. To the girl's surprise, the post box has already received nearly hundred

Russia's State Broadcaster In France To Close After Accounts Frozen

RT France, the French arm of the Russian state broadcaster, will shut down after its French bank accounts were frozen as part of the most recent EU sanctions against Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine, the channel's director said Saturday. "After five years of harassment, the authorities in power have achieved their goal: the closure of RT France," Xenia Fedorova said in a Twitter statement. She said 123 employees were at risk of not being paid for January and could lose their jobs because of the account freeze -- part of the latest European Union sanctions against Russia. Moscow had already warned of retaliation for the move by the French finance ministry, first reported by the unions of RT France on Friday. "The blocking of RT France accounts will lead to retaliatory measures against the French media in Russia," the TASS and RIA Novosti news agencies quoted an anonymous foreign ministry source as saying, accusing Paris of "terrorising Russian journa

Hipkins, 44, expected to succeed Ardern as Labour leader on Sunday after no other candidates emerged, faces a stern test upon taking power, with Labour trailing the opposition in opinion polls and the country expected to fall into recession next quarter before a general election on October 14. First elected to parliament in 2008, Hipkins became a household name fronting the government's response to the pandemic. He was appointed health minister in July 2020 before becoming the COVID response minister at the end of the year. Under Ardern's "go hard, go early" approach to COVID, the island nation of 5 million was among the first to close borders. A court in Delhi on Saturday granted bail to a man accused of molesting and dragging DCW chief Swati Maliwal, saying it will be unfair to subject the accused to a premature trial at the present stage. Ms Maliwal had on Thursday alleged that she was molested by a drunk man while she was on an inspection at night, and dragged by his car for 10-15 metres outside the AIIMS here with her hand stuck in the vehicle's window. The Kotla Mubarakpur police station registered an FIR and arrested the accused Harish Chander (47), who was subsequently remanded in judicial custody. CJI Chandrachud was speaking at an event organised by the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa here. "Guides, Like A North Star": Chief Justice On Basic Structure Doctrine

Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud on Saturday called the basic structure doctrine a North Star that guides and gives certain direction to the interpreters and implementers of the Constitution when the path ahead is convoluted. The remarks by the CJI came against the backdrop of the recent remarks by Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar who questioned the landmark 1973 Kesavananda Bharati case verdict that gave the basic structure doctrine. Mr Dhankhar had said the verdict set a bad precedent and if any authority questions Parliament's power to amend the Constitution, it would be difficult to say “we are a democratic nation”. Delivering the Nani A Palkhivala Memorial Lecture here, the CJI said craftsmanship of a judge lies in interpreting the text of the Constitution with the changing times while keeping its soul intact. In Sinking Joshimath, Chorus Against Power Firm NTPC Grows Louder

From the numerous small and big shops in the main markets to the residential properties, vehicles, and billboards, posters with the slogan "NTPC go back" have come up around the town in Uttarakhand's Chamoli district over the past few days. Local people allege that the digging of a 12-km tunnel for the 520 MW Tapovan Vishnugarh hydroelectric project exacerbated the subsidence in the area. The average annual global cost of wildfires is around USD 50 billion, the World Economic Forum said on Monday as it pitched for use of artificial intelligence in fighting them and containing carbon emissions caused by such tragedies. Greenpeace Accuses Davos Summit VIPs Of "Hypocrisy" Over Private Jet Use

Environmental lobby group Greenpeace accused attendees of the annual Davos meeting of a "distasteful masterclass in hypocrisy" on Friday over their use of private jets to travel to the event in the Swiss Alps. Ahead of the 2023 edition of the World Economic Forum (WEF) next week, the NGO said it had commissioned research which showed that people who attended last year had made roughly 500 private flights in and out of airports near the exclusive ski resort.
